Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" began as a simple piano riff she wrote in 1998, initially calling it "Interlude." The demo found its way to Ron Fair at A&M Records, who insisted on a new title and a fuller production. The final version, produced by Fair and Curtis Schweitzer, layers a sweeping orchestral arrangement over Carlton's insistent piano line, creating a sound that was both radio-friendly and distinctly her own.

Released on February 12, 2002, as the lead single from her debut album Be Not Nobody, the song climbed to number five on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Carlton's only top-10 hit in the US. It topped the charts in Australia and reached the top 10 in several other countries. The song earned three Grammy nominations, including Record of the Year, and its music video, featuring Carlton playing a piano that travels through Los Angeles, became a staple on MTV. The video has since surpassed one billion views on YouTube.

Beyond its chart success, "A Thousand Miles" has woven itself into pop culture. It appeared in the films Legally Blonde (2001) and White Chicks (2004). In a 2026 interview with People, Carlton revealed that the song's massive success once felt like a burden, but her ballet training taught her to survive failure and keep going. The song's enduring appeal is evident in its continued presence, from NBA star Jimmy Butler singing it in May 2026 to Broadway performer Derek Klena performing it with the Savannah Bananas baseball team that same month.
