A Place with No Name

A 24-second audio clip surfaced on TMZ in October 2009, just weeks after Michael Jackson died. That snippet of a new song sent fans into a frenzy and proved the vault held more than just outtakes. The track eventually emerged as "A Place with No Name," built around a melody Jackson wrote by adapting the chord progression of America's 1972 hit "A Horse with No Name." Elliot Straite, also known as Dr. Freeze, originally produced the demo during 1998 sessions intended for the album Invincible, but the project stalled before release.

The Norwegian production team Stargate returned to that unfinished 1998 recording in 2013 to craft a final version for the posthumous album Xscape. They layered modern R&B instrumentation over Jackson's original vocals without altering his performance or lyrics. Critics noted how well the production balanced the nostalgic folk-rock roots with contemporary pop sounds, creating a track that felt both familiar and fresh upon its May 9, 2014 release.

Radio programmers added the song to urban adult contemporary playlists in August 2014, marking it as the second single from the record. Although the single failed to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it played a significant role in driving sales for Xscape, which debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200.
