Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison, a washed-up 1980s arcade champion, still lives in his mother's basement and delivers pizzas for a living. Dawn, a stressed mother, juggles work and family, while her son Henry feels invisible at school. Natalie, a free-spirited teenager, dreams of something more than her small-town life. Their paths cross at a chaotic "world-building" seminar at the local school, run by the eccentric Vice Principal Marlene.

When Garrett discovers a mysterious purple cube, it turns out to be a portal key. The four are suddenly yanked into the Overworld, a breathtaking landscape made entirely of blocks, where pigs are cube-shaped and mountains float. They meet Steve, a seasoned crafter with wild blue eyes and a handlebar mustache, who has lived there for years. Steve teaches them the basics: punch trees for wood, craft tools, build shelters, and defend against the zombies, skeletons, and spiders that come out at night.

The group's main goal is to get back home, but they're soon hunted by Malgosha, a menacing piglin queen who rules the Nether. She wants the portal cube to open a permanent rift between dimensions. As they travel across the Overworld, they visit a blocky village, a desert temple, and the ancient Temple of the Sun. Along the way, they clash over their differences: Garrett treats everything like a game, Dawn struggles to let go of control, Henry discovers a knack for crafting, and Natalie finds confidence in her creativity.

Steve, meanwhile, reveals he was once human and chose to stay in the Overworld decades ago. His enthusiasm is infectious but hides a deeper melancholy. When Malgosha captures several of the group, the rest must craft powerful weapons and mount a rescue.
