A Horse with No Name

The song "A Horse with No Name" was written by Dewey Bunnell and recorded in 1971 at Morgan Studios in Willesden, London, with additional work at Trident Studios. Produced by Ian Samwell, the track features Bunnell on lead vocal and acoustic guitar, Gerry Beckley on 12-string guitar and vocals, and Dan Peek on bass and vocals. Session musicians Ray Cooper (percussion) and Kim Haworth (drums) completed the lineup. The single was released in the United Kingdom on November 12, 1971, and in the United States on January 19, 1972, with the B-side "Everyone I Meet Is from California" (also known as "Sandman").

Upon release, the song became a major commercial success, topping the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, as well as charts in Canada and Finland, and reaching number 3 on the UK singles chart. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the single gold on March 24, 1972. Following the single's success, it was added to a 1972 re-release of America's self-titled debut album in the United States; the album itself went gold on March 10, 1972. The song's gentle, acoustic-driven folk rock sound and hypnotic melody made it an enduring staple of classic rock radio and a defining hit of the early 1970s soft rock and folk rock movements.

Despite its popularity, some radio stations initially banned the song due to a misinterpretation of the lyrics as referencing heroin ("horse" being slang for the drug). Bunnell has repeatedly stated that the song is not about drugs, explaining that it was inspired by the desert landscape of the American Southwest, which he had never visited at the time of writing; he imagined the journey through a barren, surreal environment. The song's evocative, enigmatic lyrics have invited much interpretation over the decades, but Bunnell has maintained that it is simply a travelogue of an imaginary ride. [edit]
