It has been thirty years since Dolly Parton last released a holiday record, so the arrival of A Holly Dolly Christmas in October 2020 felt like a long-awaited reunion. This forty-seventh solo studio album marks her third full-length Christmas project, following The Single-Handed Christmas and Home for Christmas. Released through her own Butterfly Records in partnership with 12-Tone Music Group, the collection blends traditional country warmth with seasonal cheer across twelve tracks. Producer Kent Wells handled the main production duties while Parton served as executive producer, ensuring the sound remained true to her signature style.

The tracklist features a star-studded lineup of collaborators who bring unique energy to the songs. Michael Bublé joins Parton for a duet on I'll Be Home for Christmas, while Miley Cyrus teams up with her aunt for the upbeat Christmas Is. Willie Nelson, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jimmy Fallon, and Parton's brother Randy Parton also appear on various cuts. The album balances original compositions like Cuddle Up, Cozy Down Christmas and Christmas on the Square with beloved standards such as Jingle Bell Rock and Silent Night.

Commercial performance was immediate and strong. The album debuted at number one on both the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and the Billboard Top Holiday Albums chart simultaneously. It also entered the Billboard 200 at number 16, proving its appeal extended well beyond the core country demographic. Critics praised the balance between nostalgia and fresh production values, leading to a nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.
