A Clockwork Orange

Anthony Burgess penned this 144-page novel in just three weeks, releasing it on March 17, 1962. The story unfolds in a near-future Britain where teenage gangs run wild with extreme violence. Alex narrates his own chaotic journey as he commits brutal acts before the state captures him and subjects him to an experimental behavioral conditioning program designed to strip away his free will. Burgess wrote the text using Nadsat, a Russian-influenced slang that gives the narrative a distinct, alienated voice while reflecting the youth subculture of the time. Critics have recognized the work's impact since its release. A Clockwork Orange appeared on Time magazine's list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923 and earned a spot on Modern Library's top 100 list for the 20th century. Libraries worldwide hold copies, but the original manuscript resides at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, after they purchased the documents in 1971.
