A pacifist Trisolaran warns her not to reply, but she ignores the plea and invites them to Earth.

Fast forward to present-day London. A string of top physicists commit suicide, leaving behind cryptic notes about the laws of physics breaking down. Auggie Salazar, a nanotech researcher, and her colleagues at Oxford, Jin Cheng, Jack Rooney, Will Downing, and Saul Durand, find their experiments failing inexplicably. Detective Da Shi, a no-nonsense cop, suspects a link between the deaths and a mysterious online game called Three Body. The game simulates a world with three suns, where players must solve the riddle of chaotic orbits. As the scientists delve deeper, they realize the game is not fiction: it is a primer for Trisolaran culture, created by human collaborators to prepare Earth for the invasion.

The group discovers the existence of the Trisolarans, an alien race from a planet with three suns.
