2 Broke Girls, created by Whitney Cummings and Michael Patrick King, aired on CBS from 2011 to 2017, spanning six seasons and 137 episodes. The show pairs Kat Dennings as Max Black, a sharp-tongued waitress from a rough background, with Beth Behrs as Caroline Channing, a former trust-fund princess who lost everything after her father's Ponzi scheme. Together they work at a Brooklyn diner, dreaming of opening a cupcake shop. The ensemble includes Garrett Morris as Earl, the elderly cashier; Jonathan Kite as Oleg, the lecherous cook; Matthew Moy as Han, their diminutive boss; and Jennifer Coolidge as Sophie, their loud Polish neighbor. The series blends rapid-fire one-liners with a classic sitcom structure, earning a loyal audience despite mixed critical reviews. Its humor relies heavily on sexual innuendo and class satire, and the show maintained solid ratings throughout its run.

The series opens with Caroline Channing arriving at the Williamsburg Diner in Brooklyn, having just lost her fortune after her father Warren Channing is convicted of running a massive Ponzi scheme. She is hired as a waitress by Han Lee, the diner's Korean American owner, and is reluctantly taken in as a roommate by her new coworker Max Black. Max, who grew up in poverty with an absent mother, is cynical and street-smart but has a talent for baking cupcakes. The two women, despite their vastly different backgrounds, form an unlikely bond and set a goal of saving $250,000 to start their own cupcake business, Max's Homemade Cupcakes.
Over the first season, Caroline adjusts to working-class life, learning to use public transportation and shop at discount stores, while Max slowly opens up to the possibility of friendship and trust. Their cupcake business begins as a small operation, baking in their apartment and selling at the diner. In season two, a famous television personality gives Max's cupcakes a glowing review, leading to a surge in demand. The girls find a retail space and open a storefront attached to the diner, but face setbacks including a rat infestation and eviction threats. Season three sees them operating from a walk-up window at the diner while Max enrolls in a professional baking program at the Manhattan School of Pastry, where Caroline works in the office to cover tuition. Both girls develop romantic interests at the school.
Season four finds the cupcake business briefly successful before falling into debt. To repay loans, Max and Caroline take jobs at an elite pastry shop called The High. The season ends with the wedding of Oleg and Sophie. In season five, Caroline sells the rights to her life story to a film producer for $250,000, using most of the money to expand their cupcake space into a dessert bar. The remaining $30,000 buys them part ownership of the diner, helping Han pay off gambling debts. Max travels to Hollywood and begins a relationship with Randy, a lawyer to the stars. Sophie becomes pregnant with Oleg's child. Season six follows the birth of Sophie and Oleg's daughter Barbara, Randy's return and failed attempt to move Max to California, and Caroline's new relationship with Bobby, a contractor. The movie about Caroline's life is produced with significant creative liberties.
2 Broke Girls is a divisive sitcom. The strong chemistry between Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs and their sharp one-liners are often undercut by crude sexual humor, racial stereotypes, and a reliance on repetitive jokes about poverty. The multi-camera format and laugh track feel dated, but the leads deliver committed performances that occasionally elevate the material.
