1989 (Taylor's Version)

When Taylor Swift released her fifth studio album in 2014, she made a definitive break from country music to embrace pure synth-pop. Nine years later, on October 27, 2023, she returned to that era with 1989 (Taylor's Version), the fourth project in her campaign to reclaim ownership of her master recordings. The dispute began when Scooter Braun's Ithaca Holdings acquired Big Machine Records and Swift's original catalog in 2019, leaving her without control over her early work. By re-recording each album, Swift created new masters she owns entirely.

The project faithfully reproduces all 16 tracks from the 2014 deluxe edition while adding five "From the Vault" songs written during the original sessions but omitted from the initial release. Swift collaborated with Max Martin, Shellback, Imogen Heap, and Ryan Tedder to recreate the gleaming synthesizers and drum machines of the original production. Jack Antonoff produced all five vault tracks, providing a cohesive sonic bridge between the 2014 sound and her more recent musical direction.

Critical reception highlighted the subtle improvements in vocal delivery and warmer production tones compared to the 2014 version. Tracks like "Clean" and "This Love" gained new depth as Swift's voice matured. The vault material received universal acclaim, with "Is It Over Now?" standing out for its sharp lyrics about a messy breakup. Commercially, the album sold 1.653 million album-equivalent units in its first week, surpassing the original debut and becoming the first album to sell over one million vinyl copies in a single year since Luminate began tracking such data.
