About
The club traces its roots to 1906 with the founding of FC Olympia Oberschöneweide, but the entity known today as 1. FC Union Berlin officially formed on January 20, 1966. This date marks the consolidation of various East Berlin teams during a period when the city was divided. The club became the representative team for East Berlin in the DDR-Oberliga, developing a distinct identity separate from the West Berlin establishment. After German reunification in 1990, Union joined the unified league system and spent years rebuilding in the lower divisions.
A decade-long campaign in the 2. Bundesliga culminated in a historic promotion to the top flight in 2019. The team surged quickly after reaching the Bundesliga, qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2021 and securing a spot in the Champions League by finishing fourth in the 2023–24 season. They play at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, a ground opened in 1920 that remains one of the most atmospheric venues in Germany. The fanbase has grown to over 72,000 official members who sing Eisern Union to support their team.
History
The path to the Bundesliga involved a long struggle through the second tier before the 2018–19 season delivered the breakthrough. Urs Fischer led the squad to promotion, becoming the defining figure of this modern era. His tenure ended in late 2023, followed by a series of managerial changes including Nenad Bjelica, Bo Svensson, Steffen Baumgart, and interim stints by Marco Grote and Marie-Louise Eta. Mauro Lustrinelli currently holds the position amidst ongoing coaching transitions.
Rivalries center on the Berlin derby against Hertha BSC, highlighting the contrast between the working-class East Berlin club and the established West Berlin power. Fan culture plays a central role in the club's identity, featuring traditions like the annual Weihnachtssingen (Christmas carol singing) event. Supporters maintain a strong connection to the club's history and values, creating a unique atmosphere at the stadium.
