Skyeports LUNGS glass habitats on the Moon
by Terrymiller: NASA
Glass domes on the Moon is the pitch Skyeports LLC is running with, and NASA is funding the study through the LUNGS project. The play: lunar soil gets melted down with microwave technology, then that molten glass gets shaped into big spherical structures. Insulation and radiation shielding come from stacking multiple glass layers packed with argon gas, ringed by lunar soil. Same transparent habitat idea is on the table for Mars too, built from whatever resources are already sitting there, with future human settlements as the endgame.

NASA has funded a study to explore building giant glass habitats on the moon using lunar soil. The concept, called lungs, was proposed by space architecture startup SkyPorts. Researchers plan to melt lunar soil using microwave technology and shape the molten glass into large spherical structures. Multiple glass layers, filled with argon gas and surrounded by lunar soil, could provide insulation and radiation shielding. Skyports has also proposed similar transparent habitats for Mars, using locally available materials to build large glass domes for future human settlements.
