Mark Cuban on taking any job

    by Tufail: Mark Cuban

Mark Cuban's advice starts with the job hunt, and it's the opposite of holding out. Waiting around for the best or perfect opening is a losing game since those are the hardest to find, so the move is to just get a job, any job. Then the real work begins: become really good at it. That requires being brutally honest with yourself, because almost nobody sits at their desk thinking "I suck" when the truth is they believe they're great at this. Being really good is what makes doors open up. Even in the worst possible job, whether that's a McDonald's or a Dairy Queen, there's a path. You want to be able to show a future employer you moved up the line, and then have the reference come back saying Steven was incredibly valuable, we're really sorry he's leaving, we tried to keep him. That's what you need, and it can happen in 2-3 years. Most people just don't want to think like that. #MarkCuban

Don't go get the best job because that's the hardest to find. Don't get the perfect job because those are hard to find. Just get a job. And when you have a job, just work to be really good at it. The second part of that is you have to be brutally honest with yourself because nobody looks at the job they're doing and says, I suck, right? They're like, oh, I'm great at this. They just don't realize it. No, you have to be honest and talk to people around you. But when you're really good at something, that's when doors do open up. and even in the worst possible job. You know, you could be working at a McDonald's, at a Dairy Queen, but there's a path, you know, and if you understand how to move up that path, even though your life mission isn't to be the manager of a McDonald's or a Dairy Queen or whatever, the fact that you can show a future employer that you moved up the line and then when they asked for a reference, they said, Stephen was incredibly valuable. We're really sorry, you know, that he's leaving. We tried to keep him. That's what you need. And that can happen in two, three years. It's just most people don't want to think like that. You know, you get in your head and you get inside yourself. It's just like, oh, this is miserable, yada, yada, yada.
