Art money moving to Pokémon cards
The money that once chased a Picasso or a Van Gogh as the rich guy's trophy is heading toward Pokémon cards instead, which makes you wonder about art buying habits in general. Strip it down and art is just a story stuck to an object. NFTs get called gimmicky, sure, but so does a painting someone drops billions on, and the difference between the two is thinner than people admit. Hand me a few billion and fine art still isn't happening for me, though I get why others would. My feed is mostly JPEGs anyway.

When people would think of collectibles, people would always associate it with art. And so the fine art market is usually where people's mind first goes. But a lot of the money and the value that's getting captured from people that would have bought art, they are buying things like this now. They're buying Pokemon cards. They're buying different kinds of collectibles because what is art besides a story that's attached to it? That's all it ever was, man. So when people are like, oh, NFTs are gimmicky, I'm like, have you seen the painting that motherfuckers pay billions of dollars for? You tell me that's not a gimmick? It's horse shit. And obviously NFTs are horse shit for sure. But I'm saying like, is it really that different? If you gave me a few billion dollars, I'm not buying any fine art. You're not buying no fine art. No. Are you? I mean, I probably would. I don't give a shit about fine art. If you're still into NFTs, you should definitely follow us because we talk about JPEGs more than we probably should.
