Willem Dafoe on TENZING Apple TV+

by Murphy Popcorn 🎪: Tenzing Norgay

The film TENZING is streaming on Apple TV+, centering the story on Tenzing Norgay's point of view. Director Jennifer Peedom, who has deep connections to the Sherpa community and a passion for this project, brought Willem Dafoe back after they worked together ten years prior on her documentaries. Dafoe narrated two of her nature films, Mountain and River, which gave him insight into why she was the right person to lead this endeavor. When the pitch first came in, he assumed he would play some English official in Kathmandu or something similar. Instead, Peedom revealed he would be the head of the expedition and actually climb. He immediately said great because when you do something with such a physical element, he always enjoys it as an adventure. That concrete way to enter the created world made the role attractive.

Well, I had a kind of personal history because I worked with Jennifer Petum, the director, ten years before this movie was made on her documentaries. She's made a lot of documentaries, and many of them have to do with nature and mountaineering. I narrated two documentaries. One was called Mountain, and one was called River. And while I worked with her, I liked her a great deal. And she mentioned this project. It was a passion project for her, and she was the right person to do it because she knows the Sherpa community. She's a mountain person. She had lots of connection to it, and she was very determined to tell this story more from Tenzing Norgay's point of view. He's put at the center. And that all sounded attractive, and I said, listen, if you ever get it together, I'd love to do something. But I thought it would probably be some English official in, you know, in Kathmandu or something like that. But then when she said, actually, you'll be the head of the expedition and you'll be climbing, I said, great. Because when you do something that has such a physical element, I always enjoy that. It's always an adventure and always a very concrete way to enter into the pretending and entering into the world that you're creating.
