Michael wasn't at the Royal Albert Hall for the Smash Hits ceremony in 1988, so a pre-recorded message did the talking for him while the Bad World Tour had him at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland. The award itself was a Smash Hits Poll Winner Award, handed over backstage during a three-night stand there. And the UK had put him on top as Best Male Solo Singer once more, coming off that BAD run where he cleaned up across several categories the year prior. In the message he thanks Smash Hits, the United Kingdom and every reader of the magazine over there, and says he really appreciates it. Pretty much literally a touring year so packed the trophies had to catch up with him.
