Roman Storm Tornado Cash retrial

    by Gigliola: Tech

A retrial still hangs over Roman Storm after a Tornado Cash conviction tied to open-source code he had no control over. Meanwhile Samourai Wallet's founders are serving five years and four years. What bothers me is who's judging: no cryptography background, no crypto holdings, no grasp of smart contracts or blockchains, just money went that way so grab whoever's name is on it. Storm couldn't halt funds through those contracts if he tried, people used his tech for their own ends. Build a tool, watch a stranger abuse it, and somehow you're the one facing prison. Wild. h/t #Tech #Crypto

The Samurai Wallet, its founders were sentenced to five and four years in prison in November 2025. Roman Storm, a developer on Tornado Cash, was convicted on one charge and faces a retrial apparently in April of 2027. The regulators aren't very sophisticated, right? Like, you know, they're not, they're not cryptographers. They probably don't hold any crypto or Bitcoin. They don't know what smart contract technology is or what blockchains are. They just sort of see like, hey, like money's been moved into this area. and they're like, okay, let's go after whoever that person is. And it's unfortunate that really good developers and key people in our industry that have contributed to the foundation of everything we have end up becoming targets. And I think TornadoCache is a really good example of that. He was just contributing to a piece of open source code that he had no control over. He can't stop any funds going through the TornadoCache contracts, even if he wanted to. People were just using his technology that's open for their own purposes. But when the law sets their eyes on you and they deem you to be the person responsible, you end up being the person responsible. That's sort of what we're seeing with him. Here we talk Bitcoin, altcoins, and whatever crypto Twitter is arguing about this week. So if you're in that world too, hit that follow button.
