Zach XBT hardware wallet critique

    by Kelsey7f: iPhone

ZachXBT dropped a take that hits hard: every hardware wallet is useless for signing or storage. A dedicated iPhone is the safer play, especially after Ledger's supply chain mess where fake units emptied wallets in regions with weaker laws. The real defense is an air-gapped device doing one job only, no Wi-Fi, no distractions. That could be a laptop or just that spare phone sitting offline. It makes you rethink everything we've been told about crypto security. h/t

Zach XBT actually put out something. Hey, hot take. All hardware wallets are complete garbage and I do not advise using them for important tasks like signing transactions or storing funds. Much better to have a separate iPhone with its only purpose being to use as your hardware wallet. Damo, is it better to use an iPhone than a hardware wallet like Ledger? I would infer and think that he wrote that because hardware wallets like Ledger are susceptible to supply chain attacks, which is precisely what happened recently with the Ledger compromise, right? Even if the device itself by design is secure, you have the supply chain risk vector where someone can, I don't know, commandeer the sale of Ledger in other countries that have less robust legal systems and then actually end up selling fake units. And then those fake units themselves are compromised. I think what Zach is trying to say here is you need devices that are entirely air-gapped, right? Where what the whole purpose is just to do one singular thing. And so you can have an iPhone in this instance, or you can even just have a laptop, right? That never connects to Wi-Fi, right? Whose only role is to just assign a particular transaction. Here we talk Bitcoin, altcoins, and whatever crypto Twitter is arguing about this week. So if you're in that world too, hit that follow button.
