Iran Starlink crackdown

    by Jolyon: Elon Musk

The Iranian government has escalated its response to citizen access to global information by threatening the death penalty for anyone caught possessing a Starlink satellite dish. Tehran's cyberspace chief explicitly labeled Elon Musk's satellite internet as a tool of war and claimed the regime possesses several systems capable of disabling these terminals, with plans to share those methods with allied governments. The legal consequences are severe: using a dish carries a sentence of six months to two years, while distributing them can lead to up to five years in prison. If charges are upgraded to espionage, the punishment becomes capital punishment. Deputy Technology Minister Daniel stated that Starlink does not require Iran's network infrastructure, characterizing it as the last nail in the coffin regarding state control over information. He warned that during future crises, authorities will have to cut electricity to the entire country to prevent further uprisings. This follows events in January when the regime shut off the entire internet, an action reports indicate led to thousands of protesters being killed. Videos documenting that brutality reached international audiences only because Iranians risked imprisonment to upload footage via smuggled dishes. Security forces actively raided apartment buildings hunting for rooftop installations of Starlink equipment. SpaceX responded by making the service free for users in Iran. Without these terminals and the people willing to use them despite the risks, the world would remain unaware of the scale of deaths and suffering. The actions taken by the government signal a deep fear of its own citizens and the truth getting out. Source: Al Jazeera elonmusk / Writer: Daniel
