OpenAI engineer spy device arrest
The timeline OpenAI is having: an engineer planted a recording device in the executive area, Sept 28, and it sat there wrapped in toilet paper, running off the back of a TV. Staff found it Sept 30 and clocked that the audio was encrypted. OpenAI then turned its own models on the hardware to work out who was behind it. Oct 5, a camera catches the same guy inspecting the spot behind the television. Oct 9, the FBI arrests him. OpenAI's line is that nothing points to him reaching customer data, source code, or model weights. Using your own AI to investigate your own engineer is a setup I did not have on my bingo card.
