That lean in Smooth Criminal has no business looking as effortless as it does. MTV gave the short film its premiere 38 years ago, and Colin Chilvers was the one in the director's chair. The whole thing anchors MJ's Moonwalker anthology, with nods to The Band Wagon and Fred Astaire baked into the concept. White suit, fedora, a club straight out of the 1930s, and a move that still reads as pure magic on screen. But Annie's still not okay, and honestly, neither is anybody who thinks they can pull off that lean without the right rigging. Some things you just can't fake.
