by Anjali Filmi: Mike Flanagan
Anxiety for his oldest son, who was about to start high school when Mike Flanagan began working on the 'CARRIE' series, birthed much of this work. The creator explicitly linked his creative process to these personal parental concerns while writing.

The thing that I learned the most is that my personal experience in the 90s doesn't really apply at all to the modern teenage experience. My oldest son was about to start high school when I started working on this. So much of this was born out of my anxiety for him and trying to understand the world he was entering. We invited a lot of teenagers into the writer's room to tell us about their experience and about the world that they inhabit every day. And what I came away from it with, you know, as a parent, I had this gift where I could suddenly have these conversations with my kids that I don't think I otherwise would have known how to have. And I came away from it with such a profound respect for this younger generation who have a fortitude that I never had to have in the 90s growing up in high school was hard. High school was brutal for me. It's much, much brutaler for them. And that's what I came away with it, you know, understanding it was, It was humbling and I spent a lot of time listening. And that was one of the real gifts of this show for me. I learned so much.
