Cowherd critiques Jerry Jones spending

    by Yutaofficial: Colin Cowherd

Colin Cowherd says Jerry Jones has the spending priorities all wrong for the Dallas Cowboys. In an NFL salary cap league, you can spend unlimited on coaching staffs and front offices without it counting against the limit, yet the team goes cheap there while overpaying for players, yachts, stadiums, and practice facilities. Strong coaches push back, but Jerry doesn't like that pushback. The strategy should be spending big on top GMs to find value in third through seventh round picks, like the Rams do with Kyle Shanahan extracting juice from guys like Brock Purdy and George Kittle. Instead, Dallas relies on world-class facilities and a massive brand built on Texas game-day revenue while underinvesting in the people who actually coach. This approach led to a 24-16 loss to a winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers squad missing Mike Evans, where Dak Prescott threw one touchdown and two interceptions.

In a salary cap league, all right, there's a ceiling, right? There's two places where you can spend all you want, and it doesn't count against the cap. Coaching staffs and front offices, head coaches and GMs. And the Cowboys go cheap on those. Jerry didn't go cheap on his yacht, his helicopter, his stadium, his practice facility. They pay top of the market for Quarterbacks, defensive tackles, and wide receivers. He goes cheap on the staff. Let me just say this. My belief is, and I think this is fairly obvious, so it's not a revelation. This is not Watergate or something, folks. Strong coaches push back, and Jerry doesn't like the pushback. Parcells and Jimmy push back. He doesn't want it. But here, I think Jerry has it backwards, and I'll explain this. I think what you really spend money on, you try to find value in players finding gems in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh round. because if you spend the money on the top GMs they find those And if you spend money on a McVeigh or a Kyle Shanahan go look at the Rams They extract every bit of juice out of their players Go look at the Rams, tight ends, running backs, and wide receivers. There are no first-round guys there. I mean, there's only like one second-round guy. It's third-round guy, fourth-round guy, fifth-round guy, sixth-round guy. Brock Purdy, seventh-round guy. George Kittle for Shanahan. George Kittle, fifth-round guy. I mean, Debo, that's about as high as they do. Second-round guy. Go look at the Rams' skill players. Kyron Williams was, I think, fourth round. Blake Corham, third. Puka, fifth. Whittingham, sixth. So when you spend the money on the GM, they can find some gems, and then you pay big money for the coach, and he'll squeeze the juice. He'll turn a B-minus to a B+. He'll take a C-plus player and make him a B player. Jerry's got it backwards. Jerry will overpay top of the market for players, a yacht, a stadium, a practice facility, and go cheap on the coach. I mean it like hosting a party in a mansion and then you like oh who doing the catering yeah we called subway what well applebee number was busy what like i just don understand it it backwards i mean think about this and i use the word extract and that's instructive with jerry because he's an oil man so when you were extracting that oil were you using third tier operators and second tier equipment? Of course you weren't. I just think Dallas has it backwards. World-class stadium, world-class yacht, world-class practice facilities. They pay their top-of-the-market players. It's a huge brand. The Dallas economy, hell, the Texas economy. You got so much extra money on game day revenue. People in Dallas make money and they spend it and they love their team and it's a massive brand and let's go cheap on the coaching staff. And then Jerry wonders why he pounding the table and why he mad after the game Extraordinarily disappointed You really do need to get it done when it's there to take. Their staff, their quarterback, all their players have got a great victory here tonight and it was a tough loss for us. anytime I see blown coverages multiple times, I worry about coaching. So just think about this. In just three quarters, this is with an undrafted quarterback, a rookie on the road on a short prep week. The Buccaneers set season highs in points, rushing yards, total yards, touchdowns, and first downs. Think about this. Rookie quarterback on a short week on the road. Mike Evans isn't there to bail you out You know, right? Like you got rid of your star receiver He can bail you out I mean, that's just say it out loud Rookie road short week And Dallas spent all that money on defense
