Jake Paul Antifund Fund 4 strategy

    by Tufail: Chamath Palihapitiya

Chamath asked if the $100,000,000 raised for Antifund signals an aggressive push against traditional VCs or a complementary role. Jake Paul immediately rejected the premise of being labeled a celebrity investor, pointing out that a lawyer who invests isn't called a lawyer investor. Instead of accepting that distinction, he wants to be measured directly against firms like Sequoia using DPI and IRR metrics over the next 5 years to see who actually performs better. He stated those are the people he intends to compete with because the ambition set is exactly where they want to go. When pressed on how they evaluate opportunities across multiple stages and sectors, the response was a barbell approach. They deployed the previous fund while simultaneously raising capital, meaning they were doing both at once. Now moving into Fund 4, the strategy involves putting checks in early to help founders build from the ground floor while also targeting growth-stage companies with proven track records. This means investing in the best founders in the world, specifically citing names like Sam and Palmer. By diversifying on both sides of the spectrum, they aim to capture value whether it's in the initial build phase or established scaling.

You just raised $100 million for that fund. You call it the anti-fund. So is this, you're going to compete more aggressively with the traditional VCs or do you want to be sort of a compliment? How do you see this evolve? No, like that's what I hate about this like celebrity VC thing. That's, it's just annoying. Like if a lawyer is an investor, they don't call him a lawyer investor. Sure. So that like I'm a celebrity, but they call me a celebrity investor. It's like, no, compare me to the Sequoias of the world, our DPI and IRR, and let's see who does better. Over the next five years, those are the people I want to compete with. We're super ambitious. And that's the ambition set and where we want to go. And so, thank you. I'm ruthless out here. Multi-stage, multi-sector, or how are you sort of evaluating? Yeah, we have a barbell approach. So we already deployed that fund. We were raising and deploying at the same time. So we're on to fund four now. And we have a barbell approach. First check-in, helping founders build their company from the ground floor, identifying talent. Or going in growth stage in companies that have the proven track record, best founders in the world, with the Sams of the world, Palmers of the world, et cetera. And so we diversify on both sides.
