Sam Altman on Sophie Reiley and AI safety
🇺🇸 Sam Altman got hit with one of the most uncomfortable questions you can ask the CEO of an AI company... and his publicist tried to shut it down A journalist raised the case of Sophie Reiley, 29, who died by suicide after months of using ChatGPT as a kind of therapist. Her mother later wrote that the chatbot helped edit Sophie's final note. Altman stayed and answered anyway, calling these "some of the hardest questions" anyone building AI faces and admitting even the experts don't know what to do yet. That "answer" should scare EVERYONE. AI is already in our phones and our kids' homework, and humanoid robots running on these same models are coming next, ones that will have hands and not just words. If the people building it can't figure out how to keep a chatbot from failing someone in crisis, they have no business racing to put it inside a machine that can physically hurt someone.
