Sam Altman Jony Ive AI hardware

    by Vojtech: Sam Altman

Sam Altman just called the iPhone the greatest piece of consumer hardware ever made, but he's quick to point out it wasn't built to absorb the context of your whole life. The problem is current phones operate in a strict on/off state; you use them, then they go in your pocket and stop understanding anything around you. He explicitly stated that since his phone is in his pocket, it isn't going to understand us, so he wants a device that can actually participate and understand this conversation. That specific limitation is exactly why he is building new hardware with Jony Ive, aiming to remove the visibility caps AI currently faces on mobile. It forces a comparison on which model can actually run an assistant with that kind of continuous awareness: GPT-6 Astra or Kimi K3. #SamAltman

Is AI hardware outside of that a priority to you? I know Johnny Ive is involved. Oh, you mean, I thought you were going to say chips. You mean like consumer AI hardware. Totally. We were talking earlier about how you want an AI to have all the context in your life and current hardware, which is amazing. I think the iPhone is currently the greatest piece of consumer hardware ever made by a lot. Incredible what that has done. But it was not meant for a world where you needed a piece of hardware that could absorb all of the context of your life. You can use the phone, you can stop using the phone, you can put it in your pocket, but it's kind of like on or off. And when we are not using it, like, this has been a very interesting conversation. I would love this to be referenceable by my personal AGI later, but my phone is in my pocket and it's not gonna understand this. And you would, I would like a device that, if I wanted to, can participate and understand and know about this conversation. Totally. I think also it'd be interesting to get outside insights.
