Deion Sanders on playing for Atlanta Hawks

    by Can: Deion Sanders

Deion Sanders recalls the Atlanta Hawks offering a shot to play three sports at once, but a college coach shut that down. He says he was 24.6 with specific metrics back then and describes sprinting, stealing, and hitting free throws just to prove it could work. The whole situation comes down to one person telling him no when he knew he had the skills.

I got a question. Yes, sir. How did you truly manage playing both sports? Some of y'all played two sports. You played two sports in high school, right? Yeah. Why you stopped? Because some fool told you what you couldn't do that he ain't never done before. So I didn't know no other way. Matter of fact, I told, well, what coach did I tell coach if I had my toes on, I would have gazed him out of something today. But I had left my toes in the office, all right? So I was 24.6 before the three, dunking and doing all my things, touching the top of the square easily. I was a basketball kid, I loved that. I loved basketball, but they didn't allow me to play in college. They was gonna let me play for the Hawks one time just to play three sports, and they didn't allow me to do it. But I wanted to do it, because I told the gentleman, I'm gonna give you 10 just off the sprint. Give me one steal, that's two. I'm gonna go to the free throw line, I'm gonna hit one. All right, and I got six on my own. So I got two.
