Kinshasa Project stadium costs comparison
RDC: The reported figure for a new STADIUM in KINSHASA sits at 600 million USD, but the story behind those numbers is far more complicated than a single price tag. When this project first hit the news in 2024, it was pitched as a massive venue holding 60,000 seats, only to be scaled back later to 40,000 seats, while the initial cost estimate hovered around just 60 million USD before the entire plan shifted toward a much smaller complex. To really understand where that money goes, you have to look at how other major builds stack up globally. Take the Grand Stade Hassan II in Morocco, which has a planned capacity of 115,000 spectators and a budget of 5 billion dirhams estimated by Reuters at 500 million USD, with construction scheduled to run from 2025 to 2027. Over in Mexico, the Luis "Pirata" Fuente stadium holds 22,500 seats, and its reconstruction cost approximately 87 million USD, taking place between 2022 and 2025. Then there is the Omnisport Paul Biya Stadium in Cameroon, seating 60,000 people, built for 240 million EUR during works that lasted from 2017 to 2022. In South Africa, the Cape Town Stadium accommodates roughly 69,000 seats, came in at about 600 million USD, and saw construction stretch from March 2007 to December 2009. Meanwhile, Toronto Stadium in Canada is preparing for a tournament capacity of 43,036 seats specifically for the 2026 World Cup, having received 157.9 million CAD (approximately 111 million USD) for work slated from 2025 to 2026. These figures come from sources like StadiumDB and the City of Toronto, but a crucial note remains: these amounts are not perfectly comparable because some lists cover only the stadium structure while others include full reconstruction or wider developments. Consequently, calculating the cost per seat serves merely as an indicator rather than a definitive measure of a project's profitability or quality. #Reuters

Cher ami, bonjour.
