Markwayne Mullin on migrant caravan

    by Flint: Markwayne Mullin

Markwayne Mullin, the DHS Secretary, says the caravan moving toward the United States is getting repelled. His claim: because of a First Nation agreement, these migrants are forced to seek asylum in Mexico instead, and once they do that, the legal right to claim asylum in the United States is gone. In his words, "They all claimed asylum in Mexico, which means legally they don't have a right to claim asylum in the United States because we have a First Nation agreement." He also made clear there's zero confidence the U.S. lets this group in, and he expects the caravan will probably break up before it ever gets there. "We believe this this caravan will probably break up...I will tell you right now zero chance we allow them to enter the United States!" And on the northern border question: "If they allow them to continue to come north, when they get to their northern border, our southern border, we're NOT allowing them to enter!" The argument being made is that Mexico never should have let them in to begin with, and it's on Mexico to secure its own borders. Beyond that, there's a direct political push: back Republican candidates in November to keep these border policies in place. If Democratic candidates win, the prediction is that border crossings go up. Securing borders is framed as essential for saving the hemisphere and the republic. That's the whole package.
