We just played the demo for Neverway, and I am deeply unsettled. In the best possible way, Neverway is a psychological horror life sin when you play as Fiona, who quits her dead-end job and moves to a remote island to start over on a farm. Yes, very Stardew Valley, and no, not the first time I've said that in a video. However, instead of saving the local rec center, she becomes the immortal herald of a dead god, ends up in its debt, and watches a nightmare reality called Neverway start to leak into her own. The somewhat monotone colors from the same pixel artist that did Celeste, The warp and dissonant music from the disaster piece and a mystery that keeps you guessing all adds to a great atmosphere, one of the weirdest indie games we've ever played. However, a lot of the cozy games I've played, horror or not, typically are light on the combat. But not in Neverway. It's very Zelda-like, complete with a dash, special abilities, and a tool that is literally just called the hookshot. The demo is only a taste of all of this, as the full game promises farming, fishing, crafting, romance options, and a mortgage due every tree day. because there's no worse otherworldly horror than monthly bills. Check out the prologue demo now on Steam, wishlist the game, and let us know what you think in the comments.
