Muslim prayer at St Peter's Square

The Catholic Church built those massive walls around St. Peter's Basilica because of what happened in 846, when Arab Muslims raided Rome with a plan to capture the Vatican, kill the Pope, and wipe out Christianity. That context doesn't get mentioned much anymore. Instead, the Church seems to prefer acting like Christians and Muslims have always coexisted without friction, which is a convenient version of events that skips over the actual history. What struck a Christian pilgrim at the entrance to St. Peter's Square in the Vatican was a Muslim woman laying out a prayer mat and beginning her ritual, turning toward Mecca. Same square, same ground, very different moment in time. The uncomfortable part isn't the prayer itself. It's the claim that nothing has shifted underneath it, that the mentality driving war and conquest is still intact no matter how peaceful the surface looks. If the Church won't acknowledge what happened before, that doesn't mean everyone else forgot.
