Former NFL athlete Colin Kaepernick issued a statement regarding white parents adopting Black children, noting that while he's unsure if they should do it at all, there are conditions if they proceed. He says these parents must do work to provide experiences and insight they can't offer themselves since their own background lacks cultural connection to the child's identity. The specific effort required is ensuring Black individuals are present in the child's life because there will be knowledge and support only they can give.

My parents did a lot for me. Loved me, they gave me a strong foundation, gave me a great moral foundation. At the same time, when it came to culture and it came to my blackness, that just wasn't there. And I've seen a lot of these conversations. It's tough for me to say definitively one way or the other. what I will say is if you are white and adopting a black child like you should do your work you should do your work and part of that work is also making sure that you have black folks around your child because there's going to be experiences there's going to be knowledge there's going to be insight that they have that you just can't give them and you have to be aware of the things that you can't give them and go find that to be able to have make sure they have the right supports Implex.
