Fred Astaire had to call Michael Jackson before he could believe the Motown 25 set was good enough. Not the audience, not the history books. A legend's word was the only thing that landed. Here's the part that stays with me: 47 million people watched him do the Moonwalk and five spins on his toes, and all he could see was the freeze he never held. He wanted to land on the toes and stay frozen there, just hold it. In his own words, he didn't. The man saw a few seconds he couldn't stick, while everyone else saw pop music change shape in real time.
