He was named La Liga Player of the Season, topped the Champions League for both goals and assists, created the most big chances in Europe, and recorded the highest goal contributions across the continent. Yet one year ago, he still didn't crack the Ballon d'Or top three despite finishing fifth. The stats scream top tier performance, so how did that not land him a spot in the top three? It feels like the numbers should have carried him higher than fifth place.
