Arynne Wexler pit bull joke at Lauderdale Improv
The people who didn't laugh at that Lauderdale room weren't random, they were the pit bull owners, and Arynne Wexler seems to know exactly why. Her own dog Theo gets the full Labrador treatment here, a sweet boy in her telling, friendly to anyone he meets, but she keeps him well away from pit bulls. From there the routine runs on a comparison she drops flat: pit bulls are like Muslims. She's quick to add that most of the breed isn't aggressive, then flips it and says nearly every attack traces back to them anyway. Her image for it is an Al-Qaeda sleeper cell, a dog that spends years in your home affectionate and happy, then picks up a signal none of us can see, switches on, and goes for your face. Next comes the liberal white woman defending the animal, insisting you can't put it down, it's your own fault, and trotting out the line about all her pit bulls being very calm as puppies. Sure, Wexler says, let them into every dog park then, since the other parks turned out so wonderfully. Her history point is that this breed is a recent creation, built specifically for underground fights, and she won't accept that generations of inbreeding plus fight training from puppyhood just evaporate and the dog turns Western, meaning domesticated. She'd also like to know whether any given pit bull actually practices. And no, she says, she isn't hinting at anything.
