Elif Eralp Die Linke Berlin
by Jolyon: Elif Eralp
Berlin just handed Die Linke a historic first-place finish. The party secured 25.7% of the vote, which is more than double their previous result. Party leader Elif Eralp cited New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani's victory as an example for her campaign. Both campaigns utilized a similar strategy focusing on housing costs, rents, and affordability. She described the election victory as sending a clear signal regarding politics based on affordability, social justice, and unity. Eralp claimed the same signal was sent in Berlin during the recent election. Elif Eralp is positioned to potentially become Berlin's first Left Party mayor if coalition negotiations succeed.

Yes, of course, as a woman, I'm reluctant to compare myself to a man. But naturally, New York Mayor Zoran, Mamdani's success was a big example for us. And we were very happy about it, because that election victory sent a very clear signal, not just to New York, but to the entire world, that a politics based on affordability, social justice, a politics of bringing people together can win. And I think we managed to send out that same signal yesterday in Berlin, too.
