Proxima Fusion Stellaris stellarator plant
by Terrymiller: Science
A stellarator design is the backbone of Stellaris, the fusion power plant Proxima Fusion is building out of Germany. Twisted magnetic fields are the trick for holding superheated plasma steady so atoms can fuse and dump energy. The target window for getting it running sits somewhere in the 2030s.

Germany's Proxima Fusion is set to build the world's first Stellarator-based fusion power plant. Their device, called Stellaris, is designed to confine super-hot plasma using powerful magnetic fields shaped in a complex, twisted geometry. This design, known as a Stellarator, keeps the plasma stable without requiring a current inside the plasma, unlike other fusion reactors such as Tokamaks. Stellaris uses an optimized magnetic configuration to trap the plasma in a steady path, enabling continuous fusion reactions. Proxima Fusion aims to introduce this next-generation Stellaris fusion power plant in the 2030s.
