Andrew Ng taught machine learning at Stanford and never expected the online version to pull 100,000 sign-ups. That moment proved education has no classroom limit, which led him to co-found Coursera for mass learning. He went on to build Google Brain and lead AI research at Baidu before watching the industry chase every new model while marketers called every chatbot agentic. Instead of following that noise, he analyzed over 10,000 AI engineering job postings and interviewed experts, recruiters, and hiring managers in the field. The work boiled down to four core skills required for AI engineering: building and deploying AI applications, mastering software engineering fundamentals, using coding agents effectively, and shaping what should be built. He published a two-page summary of these findings and encouraged saving it before the next wave begins.
