John Thune on Trump Dividend and GOP Midterms

    by Flint: John Thune

John Thune says he needs to check if there are enough votes for President Trump's $5,000 Trump Dividend once the midterms wrap up. The goal is putting more cash in the pockets of regular Americans. When asked about tax cuts, Thune said they will take another run at finding every chance to let people keep what they earn. This spending package could go through reconciliation if it clears the Byrd Rule hurdle. That path requires 50 Senate votes plus JD Vance breaking the tie.

Well, that's a good question, Dana, and we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. And obviously, as the president, the condition he put on it is elect us. And I think the focus, the emphasis that he was making there, and I think this is a real, this is a clear one between us and the Democrats, is he wants more money in the pockets of the American people. The Democrats want to grow government in Washington, D.C. And anytime they have power, that's what they do. They expand, they grow government, they spend more, tax more. And what the president is suggesting last night is we want more money IN THE POCKETS OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. THAT IS A VERY CLEAR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN US AND THE DEMITIES. SO COULD YOU CUT TAXES? WHAT'S THAT? COULD YOU CUT TAXES? WELL, I MEAN, WE WILL TAKE ANOTHER RUN AT IT. YOU BET. I MEAN, OBVIOUSLY, WE DID A LOT LAST SUMMER WITH THE WORKING FAMILIES TAX CUTS LEGISLATION, BUT THERE ARE OTHER THINGS IN TAX POLICY THAT WE'VE LOOKED AT THAT DIDN'T MAKE IT INTO THAT BILL. AND OBVIOUSLY, WE'RE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY we can to allow the American people to keep more of what they earn and to put money in their pockets, not in the pockets of big government and bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. That is, that is, it is every time we've had a Democrat administration, Democrat Congresses, that's what happens. You can bet on it. It's not going to be any different this time, which is why I think the American people in the end are going to come around and end up voting for Republicans for the House and the Senate, because they want to keep conservative policies in place that allow them to keep more of their own money.
