What if a robot could grab things like a chameleon catching a bug? This flex-shaped gripper from Festo does exactly that. Instead of hard metal fingers, it consists of a double-acting cylinder split into two chambers. The upper chamber is filled with compressed air, while the lower chamber contains water and is fitted with an elastic silicone molding. During gripping, the silicone cap wraps around the object with the help of the pressurized upper chamber. Unlike traditional metal cloths, these grippers can adapt to different shapes and geometries without any manual reconfiguration.
