Dr. Eli on Israel leverage
Dr. Eli argues Israel needs international legitimacy, a support historically rooted in Europe. But public opinion in Europe and the US is shifting away from Israel following events in Gaza, pressuring governments to stop legitimizing Israeli actions. He suggests European countries can ban settlement products from the West Bank, increase diplomatic pressure up to cutting ties, halt economic exchange, and stop sending weapons used against Palestinians or for expanding settlements.

And Dr. Eli, we're also seeing increasingly strong language coming from European governments, Egypt and Jordan. But we've heard this language before. What leverage does the international community actually have over Israel at this point? They do. I mean, I refuse to say that only the U.S. can pressure Israel and that Israel can do whatever it wants and that, you know, all that conspiracy theory. I don't agree. I think Israel is in dire need for international legitimacy. and has been seeking that for years and years in the past. A big part of this support has come from European countries in the past, and this is what we are seeing a significant change in since the Gaza events, but also before that. The people, the public opinion in Europe, and now recently in the U.S., is shifting away from the support of Israel, and governments are becoming more and more accountable towards their people to stop the proper let me say legitimization of Israeli action So what can European countries do They can do a lot more than just talking. They can, first of all, strengthen the rules and regulations that forbid the trading with any products that are produced in the settlements, specifically to target the illegal settlements in the West Bank. But more than that, they can have a diplomatic pressure on Israel, escalating all the way to cutting diplomatic relations. At least if they don't want to cut international relations, they can stop economic exchange. And more importantly, they can stop supporting the military establishment of Israel. and they can stop sending weapons that are used eventually by the Israeli army and by illegal settlers to kill Palestinians and to move forward with this plan that is once again making a Palestinian state in the future almost impossible.
