Christopher Nolan called Dwayne Johnson's work in The Smashing Machine (2025) one of the most powerful performances he has ever seen, stating you won't see a better one this year or most other years. Johnson described hearing that as the most inspiring thing anyone has ever said about me and an out-of-body experience while sitting with his wife. He grabbed her hand so hard she squeezed back before hugging Nolan tight and kissing him on the cheek. All Johnson could say was Thank you until Nolan doubled down saying I meant what I said because you were heartbreaking and the best performance of the year. Overwhelmed again, Johnson gave another hug since that was all he could muster.
