A dog grinning with half-closed eyes and an open mouth while you squeeze their cheeks might look like they are enduring a rude intrusion. Yet these dogs do not pull away from the face grabbing or head shaking. They lean in for more contact. For many canines, this type of playful roughhousing registers as deep affection rather than harassment. The behavior roots itself in early development. Puppies learn to interact by mouthing, pushing, and gently wrestling with their littermates from a very young age. When a trusted human mimics these physical actions, the dog interprets the gesture as an invitation to play instead of perceiving it as a threat. The distinction lies entirely in the delivery. Soft hands paired with a laughing voice and relaxed body language communicate that the interaction is fun. These cues ensure the dog knows it is not being punished. Canines are exceptionally skilled at reading human intentions. They notice the subtle difference between a shove born of frustration and a squeeze meant to tease. When they sense genuine playfulness, they respond in kind. The physical sensation also plays a major role. Many dogs enjoy firm pressure around the head and neck area. It feels similar to how some people appreciate a strong massage. When you combine that physical relief with focused attention from their favorite person, the contact becomes a celebration of the bond you share. Certain breeds lean into this specific style of interaction more than others. Golden Retrievers and Labradors are prime examples of dogs that thrive on this engagement. Friendly, people-oriented dogs often seem especially delighted by slightly energetic play sessions. As long as nothing actually causes pain and the human is clearly having fun, the dogs are happy to join in the game.
