She was an orphan. When she was 12, her relatives cruelly abandoned her. From then on, she had to fend for herself. Being a maid was the job she treasured most, but whenever the male employer made unwanted advances toward her, the female employer would only throw her out, leaving her completely homeless. That day, she spent the last of her money on a loaf of bread, but before she could even eat it, a homeless mother and daughter happened to walk past her. Seeing the little girl staring longingly at the bread, even though she was starving herself, Annie still handed the bread to the girl, but kindness couldn't put food in her stomach. With no other choice, she returned to that familiar street. It was filled with women working the streets. An old acquaintance mocked her. But when she saw the man behind her with bad intentions and realized she didn't even know where her next meal was coming from, she was eventually forced to leave with him. During the Great Depression, this was the only way she could barely survive. With nowhere to go at night, she had no choice but to sleep on the streets. The only thing she had with her was a book she'd carried with her for more than 10 years. She read it over and over, hoping the world inside the book could help her forget reality for a while. Until one day during an argument, an old woman accused her of taking up her sleeping spot. She not only drove Annie away, but also threw her most treasured book into the mud. A Red Cross worker happened to witness the scene. After learning that Annie could read, he offered her a job. From then on, she worked in logistics at a Red Cross camp. She followed the men to the hills after the battles, searching for wounded and fallen soldiers. The work was exhausting, but for the first time she had regular food and a place to stay. Annie was more than satisfied. Until one night, she opened the door, only to find a soldier harassing a strange woman. Annie immediately rushed over and drove the man away. The woman's name was Rose. She had just survived a riot, and her father had died in the chaos. Before he died, her father told her that he had an old friend in high society in Bordeaux. All she had to do was take this letter of recommendation to him, and she could start a new life. Then Rose took out the necklace her father had left her. It brought back memories of him. But as Annie looked at Rose, she realized for the first time that having a father who loved you and somewhere to turn to was a kind of happiness in itself But just as they were talking a bomb suddenly landed outside the window Annie quickly took Rose into the air raid shelter Then she returned to the surface to help the wounded But a second attack came soon after. When Annie returned to the shelter, Rose was already lying on the ground. Judging by her injuries, she wasn't going to survive. Just then, Annie spotted the letter of recommendation lying on the ground. She stared at the letter for a long time. Then a bold idea suddenly came to her. To completely erase the traces Rose had left behind, she quickly changed out of her work clothes, pulled the necklace from Rose's neck and threw it straight into the fire. But just then, she suddenly heard German soldiers approaching outside. Annie didn't have time to think. She quickly pulled the necklace out of the fire. Because if the Germans caught her, deliberately destroying Rose's belongings, her identity would immediately come under suspicion. The German soldiers soon rushed in. Annie calmly told them she was Swiss and that the woman lying on the bed was the French nurse. The soldiers didn't notice anything suspicious. Later, the Germans agreed to give her a pass so she could leave the dangerous area. When they asked for her name, Annie didn't hesitate for a second. and just like that an orphan completely became another woman two weeks later annie arrived in bordeaux she took the letter left by rose's father and found madame weill after seeing her old friend's handwritten letter madame weill had no reason to doubt her she was looking for a companion to read with her so she asked annie to read a passage from a novel annie's excellent reading ability along with the ability to read people that she developed from years of hardship impressed madame weill greatly so annie was allowed to stay she went from being a homeless to becoming a high society lady almost overnight. Madame Weil took her to all kinds of social events. She gave her beautiful clothes and a life of luxury. For the first time, Annie was truly living. The kind of life she'd never even dared to imagine. But she never dared to say too much. She didn't even dare to take part in family conversations. Because she knew very well that everything she had was stolen. But what she never expected was, while she was desperately trying to hide her identity, Madame Weil had already begun to realize that the woman standing before her wasn't Rose at all.
