On a dark playground court, Jake kept shoving his own son every time the kid tried to score. He blocked his shots, knocked him down, and acted like it was all just part of the game. He let the kid think he had a chance, then slapped the ball away the moment Jesus drove to the rim. When Jesus finally made one shot, he started to believe in himself. But on the next play, his father knocked the ball away again and sent him crashing to the ground. Jesus snapped and yelled at him, but his father acted like nothing happened. Then he threw the ball right back at his son's hands. Jesus finally lost it, grabbed the ball, and threw it out of the court. That night, the fight followed them home. His father, Jake, tried to control the room the same way he controlled the court. But during an argument, one shove changed the family forever. His wife hit her head, and Jake was sent to prison. Years later, Jesus Shuttlesworth was no longer that little kid getting pushed around. He had become the number one high school basketball player in the country. He led his school to a championship, and every major college wanted him. But the closer he got to choosing a school, the more people around him started treating his future like a business deal. His uncle wanted houses, cars, and jobs. People close to him wanted a piece of whatever they thought was coming. Even the people who claimed they cared about him seemed more interested in what his decision could do for them. Then Jake got an offer in prison. The governor wanted Jesus to join the state university. If Jake could get out for one week and convince his son to sign there, he might get a chance to come home early. Jake agreed, partly because of the deal, but also because it meant he could finally see his kids again. The next day, Jake found his daughter first. For a moment, it almost felt like a family again. She brought him back to the small apartment where she and Jesus were living. But when Jesus walked in and saw his father sitting there, everything changed. To him, Jake was not a father coming home. He was the man who destroyed their family. And so, the first meeting between father and son after their release from prison ended unhappily. Thank you.
