Steph Ango runs Obsidian, an app two other people started, and he’s kept it fiercely independent. No VC, no investors, just a team of 7 serving millions of users. He’s said no to every acquisition offer. While the whole note-taking space rushed to slap AI on everything, Obsidian took a totally different path. They built their own toolkit: Markdown, Bases, JSON Canvas, and the CLI. Then they open‑sourced it all on GitHub, where it’s already pulled in 44,500 stars.
