During the first few days, the grain absorbs moisture, swells, and begins to open. A tiny white root appears first, pushing downward into the soil to collect nutrients. Soon, a green shoot rises toward the sunlight. As the roots spread, the shoot grows taller and produces narrow green leaves. Over the next several weeks, the stem becomes thicker, stronger, and begins forming new shoots around its base.
