    So the whole thing where people get upset seeing hatchlings dropped way back from the water, turns out that long drag across the sand is basically their survival boot camp. without it they’re missing three huge things that set them up for life. first, magnetic imprinting: the second they touch the beach they lock in its magnetic signature, like setting a natural gps, and that’s what pulls them back to the exact same spot to nest about twenty years later. then there’s the muscle side of it, hauling themselves over the sand fires up their circulation, opens their lungs, and warms their flippers, the kind of cardio they need to handle the chaos of swimming in the ocean right after. and spatial orientation: they figure out direction using light off the horizon and gravity, so by the time they hit the water they’re already instinctively correcting their path instead of getting lost. drop them straight in and you strip away all of that. nature really thought this one through
