Avero ETH Zurich drone

    by Terrymiller: Science

Avero came out of ETH Zurich as a student project chasing a different kind of inspection drone, no props, just swiveling thrust nozzles that give it the full six degrees of freedom. The thing was built to handle hits and keep flying. They iterated through multiple prototypes before shutting it down last year.

This futuristic drone hides its propellers inside its body, making close-up inspections much safer. Meet Avero, an experimental inspection drone project developed by an 11-member student team at ETH Zurich. It uses enclosed propellers and swiveling nozzles to control airflow, allowing it to freely orient itself in any direction with 6 degrees of freedom while safely operating around people and infrastructure.
