I finished what I told myself would be my last meal, then carefully wiped down every piece of cutlery, erasing each fingerprint one by one. I wrote my goodbye letter, opened the window, and climbed out onto the ledge of the hotel 21 floors up. A fall from here would mean certain death, but I had no intention of jumping. I was here to pull off something big. My name is Nick. I used to be a straight arrow cop. Someone set me up, framed me for stealing a diamond worth $40 million. I got 25 years, and a lot of the guys locked up in that prison, I'd put them there myself. Every day was a careful game of survival. For years, I filed appeal after appeal. Every single one was denied. Then yesterday, my partner showed up with bad news. My father was dying days left, at most. He managed to get me a one-day compassionate release. That was the best he could do. Even so, I didn't make it in time to say goodbye. The grief hit me hard. I took it out on my brother Joey, blaming him for not taking better care of Dad. Joey fired back, said Dad died because of the shame of having me behind bars. It turned into a fight. When the guards rushed in to break it up, I seized the moment, grabbed one of their guns. and forced him to stand down. I made Joey hand over his keys and unlocked my cuffs. I blew out the tires on a patrol car and floored it out of there in Joey's vehicle. I didn't get far before squad cars boxed me in. I crashed through a barrier and tore toward a nearby railroad crossing, a freight train barreling straight at me At the last possible second I floored it blue through right in front of the train And lost the cops into chaos. But I didn't go into hiding. Instead, I came straight to this hotel, climbed to the 21st floor, and stepped out onto the ledge. It didn't take long for a crowd to gather below. Police swarmed the scene. An inflatable landing cushion was rolled out and the entire block was locked down. When the negotiator came up to talk me down, I turned him away flat. I had one specific request, a woman named Lydia. Lydia was a negotiator too, but she had no idea who I was. When she made her way out to the ledge and asked why I'd called for her specifically, You're famous. But last month, you were with a jumper on a bridge. And he died with the whole world watching. The answer was simple. I needed more eyes on this, more coverage. It worked exactly as I'd planned. The moment the press learned that Lydia had been brought in, they ran with it, hyping it up, spinning the story for maximum drama. Lydia was sharp. She had her colleagues sweep the room for fingerprints. Nothing. She figured it out fast. I'd come prepared. This probably wasn't a suicide attempt. I had another agenda entirely. She laid it out straight. The people down on the street were just rubberneckers. Some of them probably wanted to see me jump. If anyone here could actually help me, she said. It was her. Right then, a voice crackled in my earpiece. It was Joey and his girlfriend they'd quietly slipped into position at the scene. Because the whole thing before that was theater the fight the escape the chase all staged chaos to get me out and in place our real target was the diamond vault directly across the street
