I convinced my dad to tell all of us the story of how he got the job to sing background for Michael Jackson on all of his tours from Bad to This Is It. So, I hope you enjoy it. Okay, so, idiot. Tell us the story of how you became Michael Jackson's background singer in 1987. Your mom doesn't get enough credit for all this because if not for your mom, maybe I would be here, but I doubt it. I had a job job and I've had many, many, many job jobs. But New Year's night, we were sitting just kind of like making resolutions for the new year. And I said, is there something I'm not doing? Is there something I should be doing? She goes, well, maybe you need to, you know, meet somebody in the business, somebody who's working and, you know, that you can who can hopefully get you some work. The very next month, James Ingram's brother, Philip Ingram, called me. He said, hey man, I got an audition for you, if you're available, to sing on this guy's record. So I went to audition for him. When I stepped outside, I met Daryl Phenasy, who is my dearest friend, my closest friend now. And he was like, dude, he says, how come I don't know you? Where have you been? Fast forward to July of that same year. Sunday morning, I got up and I saw in the entertainment section of the LA Times, Michael Jackson's going on tour for a year. It was in the paper? Yup. Not the audition, just that he was going? Just, yeah. Got it okay Michael getting ready to do his first solo tour Okay About 12 or 1 o Darryl calls me and he goes Hey man you want to audition for Michael Jackson to be a singer in Michael Jackson band And I don't know if people believe me or not, but I was like, No, I can't do it. Why? Because you had just been born. I think you were one or two. You were two years old. And I was like, I just had a baby daughter and I got to stay home. I got to raise my kid. You just weren't going to go? I said, no. And he said, oh, okay. All right, we have the phone. And your mom was sitting across the room on the bed. She was like, are you out of your mind? She goes, well, maybe it doesn't mean you're leaving for a year. Maybe it means you'll be leaving for a few weeks and then you'll come home. Or maybe you'll be making enough money that we can go with you. I can't believe you said, no, I don't want to go audition for Michael Jackson. Every time it comes up, Daryl says. That is so stupid. you know so I called Daryl back I guess maybe 15 minutes or 20 minutes had passed and I called him back and I was like I don't know if you found anybody but yeah I would love to audition he was like oh thank goodness so he had in the meantime he had already called Kevin Dorsey who said yes and he was I don't know if he called Sheryl Crow yet but he put the put us together we bought a few Michael albums we went to Daryl's house all day we um drilled rock with you and we learned song that Daryl learned in college called Jukebox Saturday Night. Mixin' hot lakes with vanilla, jukebox, Saturday night. Alright. We're gonna have to do a part two. Sorry, we'll be back.
